December 31, 2005
Well, the last day of 2005. It's been a good year, in retrospect. It's nice to take a minute and reflect.
We have had a nice, relaxing holiday week. The week of Christmas, Gene and I saw Jim Brickman in concert. It was fabulous. He is an amazing pianist....and he had friends come along and sing some great tunes...Including kermit the frog (via satelite) sing "Why are there so many songs about Rainbows?" Fantastic time. We saw it in the newly restored Tennessee Theatre downtown. It was the first time I'd been....Gene used to go there as a teenager to see movies after it had been a rundown theater. We had dinner out and it was nice to relax before the "Santa panic"began. I never think I have enough, or the right stuff for people. It requires too much planning and I so like the last minute throw together idea.
We decided since I was singing at church Sunday morning and we all had to be there by 9:30, that we'd have Santa come a day early...so, we spent all day Saturday unwrapping gifts, playing games and puzzles, etc. Tara let me know everything was a ok....when she said "wow, this is the best day ever. Isn't this my lucky day?" Sunday ended up being a nice quiet day. I had a bad cold Saturday, but was able to pull off my duet at 10am...yeah. I didn't realize it had been so long since I have sung in public. People that I know really well were saying "oh, I had no idea you sang so well." Guess I've been doing other things for the past few years.
Emily begins her first week in primary as a sunbeam tomorrow. She had a little graduation from nursery and is very excited to now be in her own class and not "with the babies".
She made me laugh the other day when we sat down to play with her tea set, when I started to drink, she insisted on having a prayer first and then it was too hot for about 20 minutes. So, we had interesting conversations about the weather for awhile. We still have not yet had snow this year. Amazing, eh?
Tara is reading alot. She just got her own nail polish and she surprised me by doing it by herself. I about had a coronary in my chair trying to just watch her and not help....it was an open bottle on nail polish for goodness sakes!!! But, she did great. She is reading like a pro and loves to write and read words everywhere. We had a different friend over every day this week for her...next week she'll go visit others. She has to keep her social calendar full. She is a delight to have around and is a great big sister she plays barbies with Emily and trucks with Jake.
Jacob will not sit still. One minute he will be running around with a plane or car, jumping up and down and the next minute he will be out cold on the floor (for a nap)....he's full speed or stopped.
It's amazing to watch him. He loves singing Jingle bells and holding his "RUFF" stuffed puppy.
Gene is putting in alot of hours at work. There are alot of changes happening their company was bought by First American and merged with another co....so, their name is now MLS imaging. instead of Marketlinx. Management has changed too. He just took the girls to ride their new bikes in the church gym. There were also 7 moves to help with this week (talk about a transitional ward). He only had Monday off after Christmas, so, it has been a week of no Dad.
We made one batch of Christmas cookies (way too much hassle), gave those away and made a basic chocolate chip cookie for Santa. (Emily was quite disturbed that we didn't make gingerbread for him) He still brought her what she asked for and I told her it was because he liked the hot cocoa the best.
I finally dropped my statistics class, I'll pick it up once all the kids are in school. In the meantime I began my next class on budgeting and financing. I'll see how that one goes. Well, we didn't make it long through the cold season without getting sick. Emily began Saturday evening with a high fever, lasted 2 days. Sunday night I got a really bad sore throat, and yesterday just about stayed in bed all day, not by choice....I have a really bad cold. Jake has just about lost his voice and Tara has a cough....who knows if it's all the same bug. Gene is the only one free and clear of any trouble.
Last week was a busy one. Tuesday I did some Christmas shopping for carpoolers and the Angel tree, taught at Enrichment (for the last time). Thurs. we fed the missionaries, Gene had to work late since their company has been bought by First American, the leadership is changing and the new boss was in town for 2days....so, I dropped off dinner. Friday was Emily's last day of preschool. She doesn't understand why she can't go back...I keep telling her after Christmas but she seems to think that means never. Santa came to visit and they sang cute Christmas songs...one of SANTA was his name o to the tune of BINGO. They made gingerbread houses out of graham crackers and lots of frosting and candy!!! Jake had a great time sitting in the corner by himself playing with the toys. Friday night we had our ward Christmas party. We had a fun time, it was 3 hours! A full performance by a new family in our ward, the Gieses, they are really talented. Santa came to visit there too! Tara knows that all these Santas are santa's helpers, since the real Santa is so busy this time of year.
Jake's been walking around saying "Santa Yo ho ho" I didn't know santa had a pirate origin.
Emily sometimes sings but, mostly yells Jingle bells and Rudolf. I guess she wants everyone to hear. Everyone's favorite show this year is the Grinch (cartoon) Tara even wanted to set up chairs, turn off all the lights and make popcorn to watch it. Saturday Gene took Emily christmas shopping for her siblings...guess we'll take turns going.
Sunday I taught my first lesson in RS. It wasn't so bad. We had to take shifts at home with Emily. I've finally joined the ward choir, they are desperately needing help for Christmas day. I've used up all my excuses. Guess my wish for a real conductor to move in is never going to come true...so, I just wear my ear plugs and do my best! Enjoy your 12 days before Christmas.

We are happy this week. Nothing special, Jake just told me he was happy when he went to bed last night and I realized no one was sick either. Much to be thankful for, for sure! I am teaching my last time at Enrichment tonight and unfortunately they realized my calling would be vanishing with the new year and called me to be a Relief Society teacher (the second Sunday is mine)...which is this Sunday! So, I've been working on two talks and frantically trying to finish the Book of Mormon by the 31st! Tara and I made christmas cookies last night for the cookie exchange today...we'll have to try again when there are some left to eat.
I took the girls to the Nutcracker this weekend. They loved it. Emily was even happy until the last 5 minutes. I told her all the dancers had to say goodbye before we could leave....so, she waved at them as they came out for the final curtain call....during intermission, the orchestra percussionist let the girls play all the little instruments, cymbals, triangle, clapper, bell, etc. They had the best time.
Saturday Tara had a primary party, they made gifts and cards and caroled at the old folks home across the street from the church...then the girls had a birthday party to attend...it was a princess party, they got to dress up and make purses and put on makeup and everything.
Friday we had the High Priest Group Christmas party, it turned out really nice. They do a white elephant exchange and I ended up with an orange plastic elephant shaped pencil sharpener and mini paper shredder. Can't really pass that one along, eh?
A car cut infront of me to exit on Thurs. near a construction zone and a pebble hit my windshield...nothing happened then, but Sat. morning there was a ding and a crack and now it is more than 3/4 my windshield....so, we are going to get it replaced tomorrow. I'm driving around really nervous, thinking it could crack totally at any minute.
I'm meeting with Tara's teacher today to plan their Christmas party at school, and Emily's is Friday, then she has a break til the first week of February.
We are all excited for Christmas...have a happy day.

I cannot believe it is the end of November already...soon it will be Christmas and a new year and I just barely got used to writing 2005 on my checks!!
We had a good Thanksgiving weekend...Gene had a few half days last week, so I was able to get some shopping done (the kids gifts were all bought and wrapped before Thanksgiving), get packages sent and Christmas cards labeled....whew! He had to spend one day getting a flu shot and going to the dentist, so was not all fun for him.
Bob and family and Bennett all visited during the holiday. For the actual Thanksgiving feast it was just Gene and I and the kids. We had to tell Jake the turkey was chicken so he would eat it. He actually loved the cranberry jello salad...I was surprised. He has hit a burst of language improvement. He's talking much better than even last month. Bob and Cheryl both commented on how much better he is doing. Spending time with him alone while the girls are at school has really helped. His favorite thing to say to me is: "not you, I do it by myself"...getting dressed, putting shoes and socks on, playing whatever, he wants me to sit there with him, but he wants to do it all by himself.
Emily is still doing gymnastics and is behaving well this week since I told her she cannot say "no" to me or else there will be no Nutcracker ballet this weekend. Yesterday she was an angel. All I heard was "yes mam" from her....oh, music to my ears.
Tara is still really happy with school and actually had Daddy come to lunch with her last week to meet all her friends from school. She's taken a real interest in reading the library books we bring home....it's a very slow and painful process for mom, but she's coming along really well. her favorite so far is, of course,' Green eggs and ham.' What I've been amazed with is how much and how well she likes to draw. All three kids will sit down at the table and color for a long time and do such great work.
Cousin Carey and the girls painted Christmas ornaments while she was here...I need to buy christmas crafts in bulk for the holidays. We hope all of you are well.
